Medication Monday: Hydroxyzine

It is once again Medication Monday. This week we are talking about hydroxyzine. Hydroxyzine is an antihistamine. It is approved for the treatment of anxiety, but it can also be used to treat allergies, itching, nausea, and sleeping troubles.

Hydroxyzine might be known by the brand names Vistaril or Atarax. It has the benefit of not being addictive, like certain other anxiety medications such as Ativan. Indeed, it can be taken on a regular basis, either with or without food, or it can be used on an as needed basis.

And while it isn’t addictive. It does have some side effects that users should know about. These side effects include blurred vision, confusion, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, fatigue, headaches, or irritability. Rarer side effects to know about would be an allergic reaction. If this happens users should seek medical assistance immediately.

As a reminder, Medication Monday is not meant as a substitute for medical advice. Concern about the possibility of an allergic reaction, or about any of the other side effects listed above, should be directed to medical professionals, who will have prescribed this medication because they believe it is the best tool to treat the underlying anxiety. This series is just meant to offer readers a brief informative introduction to some of the medications that are available for mental health conditions.

As such, I hope this post was helpful and as always I thank you for reading.
