Faith & Healing: Adding to The Serenity Prayer

The Serenity Prayer has been an important part of my recovery. Much of what impacts my mental health is beyond my control, and I need to recognize that. By the same token, I need to recognize that the things I can control sometimes takes courage to change. Yet if I were to rewrite the Serenity Prayer, I would add one more thing. Compassion.

I would add the compassion to forgive myself. I would add the compassion to forgive others. Forgiveness is such a crucial part to my recovery, and at the core of the forgiveness that I’ve learned is the forgiveness God has shown us all, just as he grants us courage, acceptance, and wisdom.

The prayer serves as a reminder of the gifts God has given to help me manage my mental illness. It serves as a reminder of what I am capable of. It is important enough that I typically wear it on a ring on my right hand, along with key verses of the Bible to reinforces the central themes of the serenity prayer. And like I said, if I could add one more verse to that ring, it would be about compassion and forgiveness.
