Tuesday Therapy Notes: Missed Appointments

For today’s Tuesday Therapy Notes, I want to talk about something that will inevitably happen due to your schedule, the therapist’s schedule, or a combination of the two, and that is when you have to miss an appointment because of a scheduling conflict.

Missing appointments can really suck. It isn’t as disruptive for me now as it once was, but when I was just starting out in my recovery, it would often leave me feeling anxious and uneasy. It meant going twice as long without getting support, and sometimes I would really get stuck in negative thinking during that time. And if this is something you deal with, know that it doesn’t have to be the case.

That doesn’t have to be the case because there are resources now that can help support you in between therapy sessions, or if you are stuck on a waiting list for a new therapist. These supportive resources include warm lines and hotlines you can call, telehealth therapy apps, recovery support specialists, and more. With the exception of the telehealth apps, none of these are substitutes for therapy, but they can help support you and de-escalate you if your anxiety, depression, or other mental illness are proving to be just too much to handle.

So hopefully, if you can’t have your regular therapy appointment and are stuck anxiously waiting, these resources will help support you in-between appointments. Because we all need a little extra support every now and then.
